5 foods you should eat that actually taste good!

We all know that eating well and exercising properly is the key to good health. A lot of us want to have good nutrition, but can’t bring ourselves to eating only rabbit food all day everyday. Here are some things that you may already eat that you could eat more of, or you could add them to your shopping list if you usually don’t buy them. These five foods can help get you on the right track and be a replacement for those fries you were going to have at lunch.

1. Blueberries

Blueberries have been recently touted as a “superfood” and rightfully so. These berries are sweet for more than one reason. Because of their sweetness they can be added to yogurt, shakes, cereals, oatmeal, and many other foods instead of sugar. They are also really sweet because of their health benefits. The anthocyanins (the compounds that make blueberries look blue) are powerful antioxidants. These antioxidants can help decrease cellular damage and slow down the aging process.

2. Avocados

Avocados are a great tasting food. They can be used in salads, or sandwiches, and are the main ingredient in guacamole. They have a rich creamy texture because of the fat content, but don’t worry it’s good fat. Avocados provide a healthy source of mono-unsaturated fats. They are packed with other nutrients too, including beta-sitosterol which can help reduce total cholesterol.

3. Almonds

Almonds are always included in the lists of anti-inflammatory foods. A lot of the processed foods in the American diet are pro-inflammatory, which can lead to chronic diseases. So why not counteract the inflammation with a handful of almonds? Almonds are also good sources of vitamin E, magnesium, and fiber.

4. Salmon

Wild caught salmon is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to reduce risk factors associated with heart disease, cancer, depression, inflammation, and much more. Salmon is a great source of protein as well. It can be used as a main dish, an addition to salads, as a salmon burger, or many other ways.

5. Garlic

Garlic can be easily added to most meats, fish, and pasta or rice dishes to add flavor. But there is much more than flavor in garlic. Compounds in garlic have been shown to increase the bodies ability to make hydrogen sulfide, which may be why garlic is one of the best ways to lower your blood pressure naturally. Garlic can also help to decrease your risk of cancer and may help fight infections.

So how can you put all of these foods into a healthy mix throughout the day? Use blueberries to sweeten your oatmeal or yogurt for breakfast. Have a handful of almonds for a mid-morning snack. Include avocado as a sandwich spread or in a salad for lunch. Cook some wild salmon in olive oil and garlic for dinner. Eat for health AND taste!
